# Donate

Donation Pages allow you to accept recurring or one-time donations. Before creating donation pages, you must connect to Stripe, which will act as the payment processor.

## Connecting Stripe

You must have a Stripe account connected to your Organization before you can create a Donate page. In order to connect a Stripe account, reference the [Stripe integration article.](/docs/stripe)

Once you've connected a Stripe account and Stripe has turned on its payouts, you can create a Donate Page and accept one-time and recurring donations. Stripe turns on payouts after you finish its setup.

> ⚠️ **Stripe account required for public donations**: You cannot delete or disconnect a Stripe account while a published page pays out to it. First pick another account for those pages, or unpublish them. A page with no payout account shows 'This page is currently unavailable.' A disconnect does not cancel recurring donations, so cancel them first in Finances > 'Subscriptions'.

## Transaction fees

Solidarity Tech takes a fee of 1% on each one time donation. On a recurring donation, the fee is 0.3% for a Standard type Stripe account and 1% for other Stripe account types. Stripe adds its own card fee, which depends on the currency and the card's country.

Solidarity Tech sets no payout schedule. Stripe pays out to your bank on the schedule set in your Stripe account.

## Donations vs. Membership Dues

You can create two types of Donation pages:

**Donations**: One-time and recurring contributions.

**Membership Dues**: Members sign up to pay recurring dues or an upfront dues payment. When you create the page, pick 'Fixed amount', 'Income based', or 'Multiple tiers'. Each dues payment moves the person's 'Paid Dues Expires At' date forward by the period it pays for. To find members who are up to date, use the People filter 'Is an active dues-payer?'.

## Recurring Donation Periods

Except on 'Multiple tiers' dues pages, you pick the 'Recurring Period' in the page settings. Donors cannot change it. The options depend on the page type:

**For Regular Donations:**

* **Weekly**: Supporters donate the same amount every week
* **Monthly**: Supporters donate the same amount every month
* **Annually**: Supporters donate once per year

**For Membership Dues:**

* **Monthly**: Members pay dues every month
* **Annually**: Members pay dues once per year

*Note: Weekly billing is only available for regular donations, not membership dues.*

The recurring period sets how often donors are charged. By default, the recurring question on the form names the period, for example 'Make it monthly!'. It changes when you change the period.

## Donation amount

The "Choose an amount" component of every Donation Form allows you set the pre-selected donation amounts and decide whether to allow custom amounts.

### Minimum and maximum for custom amounts

When the custom "other" amount field is enabled, you can set a **minimum** and **maximum** amount that supporters are allowed to enter:

* **Minimum Other Donation Amount**: Supporters cannot submit a custom amount below this value. Leave it blank for the default minimum of 1. The minimum is enforced both in the form and on submission, so it cannot be bypassed. If the minimum exceeds the configured maximum, the minimum is ignored.
* **Maximum Other Donation Amount**: Supporters cannot enter a custom amount above this value.

These limits apply only to the free-text "other" field, not to the preset amount buttons.

### Pre-selecting a Donation Amount via URL

You can link directly to your donation page with a specific amount already selected by adding `?amount=` to the URL:

```
https://yoursite.org/donate?amount=10
```

**How it works:**

* If the amount matches one of your preset buttons (e.g. $5, $10, $20, $50), that button will be highlighted and selected when the page loads.
* If the amount does not match any preset button but you have the custom amount field enabled, the "other" field will be filled in with the specified value automatically.
* The value should be a whole number representing the donation amount in your page's currency (e.g. `?amount=25` for $25 or €25).

**Practical uses:**

* **Email and text campaigns**: Include a direct link with a suggested amount, e.g. "Can you chip in $20 today?" linking to `yoursite.org/donate?amount=20`
* **Tiered ask strings**: Send different links to different segments. Link one group to `?amount=10`, another to `?amount=50`, and track which converts best using [UTM parameters](/docs/forms#tracking-form-sources-with-utm-parameters) (e.g. `?amount=10&utm_source=low-dollar-ask`)
* **QR codes and printed materials**: Generate QR codes that point to a specific suggested amount so supporters can scan and donate with one less step
* **Social media links**: Share a direct link with a specific amount to lower the friction for potential donors

You can combine the `amount` parameter with other URL parameters like `utm_source`, `utm_medium`, and `utm_campaign` to track the performance of different donation asks.

## Progress Tracker (Fundraising Thermometer)

Add a visual progress tracker to your donation pages to show supporters how close you are to reaching your fundraising goal. This "thermometer-style" progress bar can motivate donors and create urgency around your campaign.

### Progress Tracker Features:

**Goal Setting**: Set a specific dollar amount as your fundraising target

**Flexible Tracking Scope**: Choose what donations to include in your progress:

* **This page only**: Track donations from just the current donation page
* **All pages in this website**: Include donations and ticket sales from all pages across your entire website
* **Select specific donation pages**: Choose exactly which donation pages to include in the progress calculation. The current page is always included.

**Positioning Options**: Display the progress tracker in two locations:

* **Above the page content**: Shows at the very top of the page for maximum visibility
* **Above the form**: Positioned just before the donation form for context

**When the total updates**: The tracker shows the total when the page loads. It does not change while the page is open. The total counts successful charges, and refunds are not taken off.

### When to Use Progress Trackers:

* **Campaign fundraising**: Set specific monetary goals for political campaigns or advocacy efforts
* **Event fundraising**: Track progress toward funding specific events or programs
* **Emergency fundraising**: Create urgency during crisis response or time-sensitive campaigns
* **Multi-page campaigns**: Combine donations from multiple related pages into one progress tracker

The progress tracker displays the current amount raised, the goal amount, and a visual percentage bar, helping create momentum and encouraging supporters to contribute toward reaching your target.

## Page Form

By default, it will create a multi-page form to split payment process into digestible steps.

Team members with the 'Manage Finances' permission can view and manage subscriptions, cancellations, payouts, and refunds from the [Finances tab in the dashboard.](/docs/finances)

## Reminder emails

Users who sign up for one-time or recurring donations will receive the appropriate [system emails](https://www.solidarity.tech/docs/system-emails). Edit these emails in Settings > 'System Emails', in the 'Donations' section.

## Additional Features

**Ask Donors to Cover Processing Fees**: When it is on, a donor can add an amount that covers the Stripe and Solidarity Tech fees.

**Minimum and Maximum Donation Limits**: Set minimum and maximum amounts for the custom "other" donation field to comply with regulations or organizational policies

**Currency Support**: Accept donations in USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, or AUD, with currency selection locked after page creation

**Multi-currency Display**: Donation amounts and progress trackers automatically display in the appropriate currency symbol

# Manage Your Donations

Your supporters can manage their donations from the donations manager. The default donation receipt, one time or recurring, has the link 'Update Donation Subscription Settings'. It opens the donations manager. The donations manager is at `/donations` on your website's domain. That is your custom domain or your solidarity.tech subdomain, for example `drivers-united.org/donations`.

## History

## Update billing info

By navigating to the "Recurring" donations section, you can see any active or inactive subscriptions associated with your account.

![](https://files.readme.io/3e91f24-image.png)

Click a subscription to see 'Status', 'Recurring Interval', 'Started On', 'Completed Contributions', and 'Payment Method'. 'Completed Contributions' is a count. An active subscription also has 'Update Payment Method' and 'Update Recurring Settings'.

![](https://files.readme.io/504e3c3-image.png)

From the "Update Payment Method" screen, you can update the card used for your donation, and keep the active donation intact.

From the 'Update Recurring Settings' screen, you can change the 'Contribution Amount' and click 'Save', or click 'Cancel Recurring Donation'. The new amount keeps the donation's weekly, monthly, or annual interval.

## Your Info

Supporters can update their contact information directly from the donations manager by navigating to the **Your Info** section. From there, they can update their name and phone number.

Updating an email address requires a verification step: after entering a new email, a six-digit verification code is sent to the new address. Entering the correct code confirms the change. This ensures the new email address is valid and accessible before it takes effect.
